The Department of Health’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has been investigating how some of the drugs in the UK, including Viagra, can be used to treat impotence. The agency has also received calls from users of certain products for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
The MHRA is investigating whether a number of UK medicines may be used to treat sexual dysfunction (PD), including Viagra, which contains sildenafil, a drug commonly known as a phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) inhibitor. Viagra, which is sold under the brand name Revatio, is also known as a generic form of the drug, sildenafil, which is marketed as Viagra Connect.
The MHRA said that there were concerns that the sildenafil drug may not be able to treat the symptoms of erectile dysfunction, especially when combined with other treatments for the condition, such as sexual stimulation.
It added that the agency had been working on the issue since 2018.
“A number of products are currently being investigated for the misuse of sildenafil (Revatio) and/or for their potential to cause an adverse effect in patients taking these drugs. The product investigation team has concluded that there may be a potential for misuse of sildenafil and therefore there is a need for further investigation and potential treatment in patients taking this medication to treat sexual dysfunction.”
The MHRA has been in the process of investigating whether any of the drugs included in the Viagra product line may be associated with an increased risk of blood clots and stroke, particularly in patients with cardiovascular conditions, particularly those with high blood pressure. In particular, the MHRA said that this risk may have been more pronounced in patients with heart conditions such as coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes.

A spokeswoman for the MHRA said: “The review of data from this analysis concluded that sildenafil is likely to have a lower risk of developing a heart attack or stroke in patients with cardiovascular conditions, particularly those with high blood pressure. We are investigating further, as part of our ongoing investigation of this issue, to identify any potential risks associated with sildenafil and/or other PDE5 inhibitors.
“Sildenafil, a PDE5 inhibitor, is marketed as Viagra Connect in some countries, including the UK, and can be purchased over the counter in some pharmacies. We do not currently provide pharmacists with these products.”
The MHRA said the investigation was continuing and its review will take place in the coming weeks.
